What is an “Irish Language Immersion Day”?This immersion day is patterned after the very successful Daltaí na Gaeilge Gaeltacht weekends that Ethel Brogan started over 25 years ago in New York. [ www.daltai.com ] The idea is to use the Irish words you know to the best of your ability at all times. The beginning speakers have the opportunity to hear the language in action and ask questions to their hearts' desire. The advanced speakers get to use their Irish and encourage aspiring fluent speakers. This immersion day is a slightly different, though, and since we are trying to pack a lot into one short day, we have arranged classes at various levels and subjects so that we can all get the most out of the day. There are 6 levels. 2 for beginners, 2 for intermediate and 2 for higher levels. You pick your own level but you may attend any level if you wish to challenge yourself. However there are limits to your participation in these circumstances. Levels are colour coded.
Who should attend?Complete beginners to advanced speakers who wish to improve and use whatever Irish they have.
How will you Use / Improve your Irish?By engaging in the workshops organised for your level of Irish. By using whatever Irish you have in conversation, in asking and answering questions in the workshops. In making new friends!
Who will be leading the workshops? The people leading the workshops will have knowledge about the subject of the workshop and have ability to talk about the subject in Irish.
What happens if I pick a level too advanced or easy for my ability? No problem! Just change level or pick several levels.
Do I have to attend all workshops? Not at all! There is an area where you can go to relax and chat and have some refreshments. You may come and go as you please. How will I know who is at the same level as I am?Each level is colour coded. If you mark your nametag with the colour or colours that best indicate your proficiency, people will immediately know what level of conversation you can handle, and it will make your day easier. (You can even change your colour as the day progresses if you like!)
When do I have to choose the classes? You can choose from the classes available on the shedule.
What classes are available and how can I get the timetableClasses and timetables are still to be finalised. Please refer to the websites for information. A full list of classes will be made available when we have final confirmation.
Apart from classes what other activities are organised during the day?The main café area will serve as a conversation or free zone or where there will be snacks and possibly activities to watch that don't necessarily require any effort, in case you need a break. You can also visit the book-stand, information stands or the café, of course, to practice what we are learning. You can choose as many of these conversation breaks or you wish or you can take a full day of classes if you prefer.
How is the day organised?Registration is at 11:00 and afterwards there will be an icebreaker activity with proverb cards in the foyer of the centre that will match everyone up with a speaking partner for the conversation break before and after lunch. You’re welcome to come at anytime of the day. There won’t be a formal lunch or dinner break at this event, but there will be food workshops throughout the day If people are interested we can organize a group dinner reservation next door at the Trinity Capitol Hotel. If you do plan to join us there for dinner, please put your name on the sign-up sheet posted at the door.
Can I help out during the day?Absolutely! There will be at least one 'Volunteer' Bean an Tí or Fear an Tí (Hostess or Host) in charge at all times throughout the day to help direct people and answer any questions that come up. Anyone who wants to 'volunteer' for this post of honour for an hour can sign up on the volunteer sheets that are posted!
How can I book a place on the Immersion Day?For more details go to http://www.ionad.org/ceadcainte/ Tá suil againn go mbaineann sibh an-sult as ár Lá Cead Cainte! |
